The patient
Health history, medications, previous anesthesia experiences and individual needs help us prepare. We also ask about recent changes in health.
Our approach
Anesthesia care begins before the appointment. SAP reviews each patient’s health information, speaks with patients or caregivers and coordinates with the dental team to prepare for the visit.
Each review brings together three parts of care. The anesthesia clinician discusses additional information or changes with the treating team when needed.
Health history, medications, previous anesthesia experiences and individual needs help us prepare. We also ask about recent changes in health.
We work with the dentist to understand the planned procedure, expected duration and what the dental team needs throughout treatment.
We consider the office environment, equipment, staffing and recovery arrangements alongside the patient’s needs and the planned care.
SAP contacts patients or caregivers, discusses anesthesia questions and provides preparation instructions. Both teams coordinate the schedule and clarify their roles.
A dedicated anesthesia clinician administers anesthesia and monitors the patient while the dentist provides the dental treatment. SAP brings anesthesia equipment, medications and support staff.
The anesthesia team manages the initial recovery and assesses readiness for discharge. Patients and caregivers receive instructions for care at home.
Office-based anesthesia can help suitable patients receive treatment in their dental practice. Some patients benefit from the additional resources of a surgery center or hospital. When another setting is more appropriate, SAP discusses that recommendation with the treating team.
If health or treatment plans change before the appointment, let the care team know so the anesthesia plan can be reviewed.
